Education Update September 2023

As more and more families make Canton their home, education remains a vital part of our community. Parents can look to the CCA to provide annual updates from area schools. This month we have info from Archbishop Borders, Clay Hill Public Charter School, Commodore John Rodgers, Hampstead Hill Academy, Patterson Park Public Charter School, St. Casimir Catholic School, St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore Head Start, The Crossroads School, and Wolfe Street Academy.

Archbishop Borders

• Archbishop Borders School has the distinction of being the only dual-language, Spanish-immersion Catholic school serving grades Pre-K 3 through 8 in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

• They educate in both English and Spanish languages, following the Archdiocese of Baltimore curriculum.

• They have been educating students on the campus at the corner of Foster & Highland since 1876, in partnership with Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.

• They are a community school, connecting families and students with the many resources that Canton, Highlandtown, and the city of Baltimore have to offer. 

• Students in grades Kinder - 5th maintained a community garden on campus and got to harvest vegetables this past spring!

• ABS has small class sizes, with our largest upcoming class at 23 students. 

• Bilingual adults on average have higher salaries and more career opportunities than their monolingual peers.

Clay Hill Public Charter School

Clay Hill Public Charter School is a free public charter school in the Bayview neighborhood serving students in grades K to 5 during school year 2023-2024. CHPCS is a partner school to Patterson Park Public Charter School.

Patterson Park Public Charter School is a free public charter school in the Patterson Park neighborhood serving students in grades Pre-K to 8 during the 2023-2024 school year. PPPCS is a partner school to Clay Hill Public Charter School.

Hampstead Hill Academy

Hampstead Hill Academy is a neighborhood public charter school and is operated by the Baltimore Curriculum Project, a local non-profit organization celebrating more than two decades of service and student learning with research-based educational strategies, intensive teacher training, and extensive support for principals. HHA has grades PreK – 8 and accepts students from in zone and by means of the lottery system.

HHA is known for great teachers, friendly kids, high test scores, and lots of extracurricular activities. According to MSDE, they are the highest performing elementary and middle school in City Schools. They have control over their curriculum, budget, and selecting staff. They have a thriving music and theater arts program; Leaders Go Places; championship chess, debate, baseball, soccer, and more. St. Casimir Catholic School

  • They have been #1 in test score growth in all the Archdiocese for two years in a row and continue to test well above the Archdiocese standards year after year.

  • 99% of their Eighth Graders get into the high school of their choice.

St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) of Baltimore Head Start

SVDP Head Start provides FREE early childhood education services that help prepare children ages 3-4 years for school. SVDP also helps support Head Start families to achieve their financial, housing, and health stability goals.

Wolfe Street Academy

Wolfe Street Academy, a conversion public charter school, serves approximately 250 students Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade. Operated by the Baltimore Curriculum Project, a local non-profit organization and Maryland’s largest operator of charter schools, Wolfe Street Academy uses a research-based curriculum, embedded professional development, and a holistic approach to supporting the student and family. 

As a Conversion Public Charter Wolfe Street Academy has control over curriculum, professional development, budget, and staff selection. Physical Education, Fine Arts, and Technology classes, along with recess every day support the broad education of every child. A rich after-school and summer school program is also offered on a lottery basis for all enrolled Kindergarten through 5th graders.
