Neighborhood Notes: November 2023

Red Line Community Meeting
Join the CCA on Tuesday, October 24 from 6-7 pm at the United Evangelical Church for a community meeting about the Red Line route proposals. This will be a working meeting led by the Baltimore City Department of Transportation (DOT) to get feedback from the neighborhood. RSVP

The Red Line is a high-frequency, high-capacity transit line for the Baltimore Region, and will be an investment in residents’ access to jobs, education, services, and opportunities. This project addresses a major gap in east-west transit service between Bayview and Woodlawn, through Canton and downtown Baltimore City.

There will also be a longer Open House on November 8 from 6-9 pm at the Greektown Square and Event Center, 700 Quail St.

Fire Prevent — No Firepits
As the season changes and the weather cools it’s tempting to purchase a firepit or outdoor stove to gather around, grab a Boh, and #GetNeighborly. But, neighbors, this is the least neighborly thing you can do! This is highly dangerous, unsafe, and ILLEGAL in Baltimore City. To paraphrase City Code section 307 “Open burning, recreational fires, and portable outdoor fireplaces may not be operated within 15 feet of any structure, combustible material, or property line.” Please be a responsible neighbor, follow the fire code, and DON’T engage in any form of open flame on your deck, sidewalk, or in your yard!! The community thanks you.

Third Saturday Canton CleanUp
We’re happy to share Kurt Hoffman is leading a community cleanup every third Saturday through October. If you have an hour or two to volunteer, we’d love your help. Meet at Professor Trash Wheel at 10 am to walk and pick up trash. Or choose to start at O’Donnell Square Park to weed and clean up general debris. Some tools will be provided including grabbers, gloves, rakes, trash bags, and shovels. See you this month on October 21 at 10:00 a.m. It’s also Mayor Scott’s Fall Cleanup Day of Service.

To #GetNeighborly on your block, please keep your sidewalks and tree pits weeded. Also, watch for debris in the street and gutters so water can properly flow to the storm drains. Thanks!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month BreastFest
One way to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) is to support the Tyanna Foundation Baltimore. The organization was founded by five sisters, Megan, Bridget, Katie, Anne, and Sara, after losing their Mom (Tyanna) to breast cancer when she was only 48. Fun. Feisty. Fearless — for a cause, the Tyanna Foundation is different. Known for their signature slogan “Save the Girls” and annual fundraiser “BreastFest”, the volunteers of Tyanna work tirelessly to raise funds to help make breast cancer more comfortable for patients—and less prevalent on the planet.

In Baltimore alone, over $1.8 million has been raised to support programs at The Hoffberger Breast Center at Mercy Medical Center to help ease the day-to-day burden for breast cancer patients as well as provide state-of-the-art technology to increase early detection. In 2008, Mercy named the Tyanna O’Brien Center for Women’s Imaging after the organization’s namesake Tyanna Barre O’Brien. For more information, to volunteer, sponsor, or donate, visit www.tyanna.org or email info@tyanna.org.

If your business or organization would like to host a “Round Up” Campaign or a “Pink Drink Night” in support of Tyanna, please email Rose@Tyanna.org. Or, drop by their annual fundraiser, BreastFest Baltimore, on Saturday, October 21. Tyanna thanks you for your support to #SaveTheGirls!

Cancer Screening Saves Lives
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder to schedule your mammogram! Screening tests are used before a person has any symptoms to help find cancer early, when it may be easier to treat.
