Neighborhood Notes: October 2022
/Traffic Calming Murals
Graham Projects is collaborating with the Highlandtown Community Association on traffic calming crosswalk murals to increase pedestrian visibility and calm traffic at the intersection of Eastern Avenue and S. Ellwood.
The mural design will be based on input from our community. Ideas were shared with the artists during the Highlandtown First Friday Art Walk: October 2022 (Oct. 7) at Off the Rox at 3232 Eastern Ave. from 5:00-8:00 pm!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
One way to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) is to support the Tyanna Foundation Baltimore. The organization was founded by five sisters, Megan, Bridget, Katie, Anne, and Sara, after losing their Mom (Tyanna) to breast cancer when she was only 48. Fun. Feisty. Fearless — for a cause, the Tyanna Foundation is different. Known for their signature slogan “Save the Girls” and annual fundraiser “Breastfest”, the volunteers of Tyanna work tirelessly to raise funds to help make breast cancer more comfortable for patients—and less prevalent on the planet.
In Baltimore alone, over $1.8 million has been raised to support programs at The Hoffberger Breast Center at Mercy Medical Center to help ease the day-to-day burden for breast cancer patients as well as provide state-of-the-art technology to increase early detection. In 2008, Mercy named the Tyanna O’Brien Center for Women’s Imaging after the organization’s namesake Tyanna Barre O’Brien. For more information, to volunteer, sponsor, or donate, visit www.tyanna.org or email info@tyanna.org.
If your business or organization would like to host a “Pink Drink Night” in support of Tyanna, please email Rose@Tyanna.org. Tyanna thanks you for your support to #SaveTheGirls!
Cancer Screening Saves Lives
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder to schedule your mammogram! Screening tests are used before a person has any symptoms to help find cancer early, when it may be easier to treat. To learn more, including how to schedule a screening test and how to afford a screening without insurance, visit cancer.org/get-screened.
Reporting and Preventing Crime – Tip Line
The Baltimore City Police Department asks neighbors to report crimes via this TIP email: SEDtips@baltimorepolice.org. Security camera footage and photos should be included.
CCA NEWS
Buy A Brick Program On Hold – Seeking Volunteer Administrator
The Canton Community Association Buy-A-Brick Program to benefit O'Donnell Square Park is temporarily on hold… and we need your help to continue!
1.) We are seeking a new administrator to run the program. (Thank you to Lauren Mallon Davino for all your hard work!)
2.) We are running out of available space around the flowerbeds in the park, so we are brainstorming ideas for new locations.
If you are interested in running the program (taking and placing the orders and overseeing the installation - probably 2x a year), please email info@CantonCommunity.org and put BRICK in the subject line. If you have ideas on where neighbors might also like to see memorial bricks, please send suggestions as well.
Utility Lines
Do you have utility poles around your home with inactive, loose, or potentially dangerous lines hanging from them? Any old, unused, or possibly faulty equipment? The CCA wants to know!
The CCA is starting an initiative to motivate utility companies to clean up Canton's overhead utilities but needs information on the "problem poles" first. If you have a utility pole in front of your house or in a nearby alley with any of these issues please fill out the form at https://tinyurl.com/CantonUtility.
We will pass along the information to the appropriate businesses (telephone, electric, cable, etc.) to see what can be done to get them cleaned up or removed. We are starting this process with phone/internet lines as Verizon has asked us to give them a list of specific locations.
NOTE: The CCA is not the point of contact for problems with your service. We are merely trying to help facilitate the removal of non-functioning lines.
