DPW Water Main Replacement Program Details

A program to replace or rehabilitate many of the City’s aging water mains is presently underway in Canton. The City is committed to renewing its aging infrastructure, which includes water mains that are nearly 100 years old.

Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) supplies drinking water to 1.8 million residents in the Metropolitan Area which encompasses 3,800 miles of water mains, 67,500 valves, and 23,000 fire hydrants. DPW is responsible for maintaining the 1,500 miles of water mains located within city limits. The City is committed to renewing its aging infrastructure, which includes water mains that are nearly 100 years old. A program to replace or rehabilitate many of the City’s aging water mains is presently underway in Canton.

Project Purpose

  • Improve water flows and water quality

  • Reduce water service disruptions and costly repairs

  • Minimize water main breaks

  • Minimize street closures

Project Activities

  • 1.08 miles of Water Main Rehabilitation

  • 4.96 miles of Water Main Replacement

  • Installation or Replacement of 158 Valve

  • Installation or Replacement of 34 fire hydrants
