Neighborhood Notes: March 2023
/CCA 2023 Board Election Results
The CCA held its annual Board Elections on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, during the public CCA Public Meeting. We’re pleased to welcome a new member, Deborah Manarin, to the Board. Repeating incumbents include Sheila Anderson, Jim Hamilton, Doug Kaufman, Joe Kohler, Matt “Bull” Lasinski, Zach Spedden, and Maura Taylor. Torbin Green and Mark Edelson will not be serving in 2023 and we thank them for their hard work and commitment to our community. Board terms are for 2 years, and members attend monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of each month.
Friends of Canton Dog Park Update
The good news is since we jump-started the Friends of Canton Dog Park last March, we’ve seen an increase in followers of the Facebook group, new pups & parents at the park, and lots of helpful volunteers! We encourage our members to follow the page and send us photos of you and your pups having fun at the park. (Marketing@CantonCommunity.org or tag us @CCA_Baltimore.)
On the flip side, there is an ongoing issue with the large dog side of the Canton Dog Park filling with water which we have nicknamed “the lake”. The CCA is in communication with BCRP and Councilmember Cohen’s office to address the flooding. In the meantime, neighbors should continue to call 311 to report the problem. If you’re on Facebook, please post your confirmation numbers in the thread in the Friends of Canton Dog Park group. This way we'll have a public record to track all the reports together. Thanks!
For anyone new to our community, the Canton Dog Park, located at 3221 Toone Street, provides an off-leash experience in a 2-sided park. One side is for smaller or older dogs and one is for larger pups. To learn or to donate to the park’s upkeep, please visit https://www.cantoncommunity.org/parks.
The CCA Buy-A-Brick Program has new stewards
The Buy-A-Brick Program in support of the Canton Community Association has new stewards! The CCA gives a big shoutout to Ted Hart and Kristen Mills of HDC, Inc. for taking over the project management. And thanks to Lauren Mallon Davino for doing such a great job for the last few years!! Recently neighbors gathered for a small unveiling ceremony of the latest installation at O'Donnell Square Park followed by refreshments at the HDC office. To learn more about the program or to buy a brick, visit https://www.cantoncommunity.org/buy-a-brick/purchase.
Free Community Dumpster Day
The CCA is hosting a free community Dumpster Day on Saturday, March 11. The dumpster will be located on Lakewood Ave just north of Boston St., alongside the Safeway from approximately 9:00 am until full. (Start time may vary as it’s contingent upon DPW schedule.) Plan to go early as it usually fills fast.
Acceptable materials at the dump include household trash, furniture, other bulk items, appliances, scrap metal, cans, glass, plastics, paper, cardboard, and yard waste that is bagged appropriately. No toxic or hazardous waste.
Unacceptable materials include paint, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, acids, caustics, gasoline, mercury thermometers/thermostats, syringes, fire extinguishers, propane tanks, helium tanks, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, and any other solid, liquid, or gaseous substance that is regulated as hazardous by State or federal law.
Bi-Weekly Recycling Continues
As recycling pick up continues every other week across Baltimore City, DPW tells us neighbors can dispose of their recycling on the “off weeks” at the PW Marine Operations Facility located at 3311 Eastbourne Avenue off Clinton Street south of Boston Street in Canton. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday 8 am – 2 pm.
