CCA Block Captain Program Connects Canton

Are you interested in improving communications between residents and businesses on your block, while promoting neighborhood initiatives? If so, the CCA Block Captain program is the perfect volunteer opportunity for you.

Block Captains help create a safer, more connected Canton. Their efforts improve communications between residents and businesses on matters such as package deliveries, parking, outages, garbage/recycling pickup, and 311 calls. Beyond that, Block Captains also bring residents together by promoting neighborhood volunteer opportunities.

What Block Captains Do:

  • Meet residents and business owners on their block and gather contact information.

  • Create a channel of communication for the block (e.g., WhatsApp, Facebook, email).

  • Communicate with CCA leadership to share information from their block.

  • Gather feedback and input from residents and businesses.

  • Act as a liaison for their block and Baltimore City for 311 issues and police matters, if applicable.

  • Help promote the #GetLitCanton initiative by encouraging neighbors to work with the CAA to install café string lighting on their block.

 How to Get Started

  • Email info@cantoncommunity.org to express interest in becoming a Block Captain.

  • Set up one or more platforms by which members of the block can communicate with one another (Facebook group is most common).

  • Invite members of your block to join the communication platforms.

  • Begin gathering information from members of your block about their concerns, including unaddressed 311 reports. Begin sharing information from City agencies and other organizations with members of your block (e.g., updates on city services, community association meetings dates/times, safety tips, dates/times for other public meetings, etc.).

Block Captains are encouraged to attend quarterly CCA Public Meetings and come to events such as Canton Safety & Improvement Walk & Talks. If interested in specific types of community improvements, Block Captains can also volunteer at parks and community-wide projects organized by the CCA.

The CCA would like to thank Board Member Joe Koehler for organizing and running this program. It’s a lot of work and we appreciate his dedication! If you would like to become a Block Captain or learn more about the program, please email info@cantoncommunity.org.
