DryLand Salon drops anchors in Canton

It’s February and that means Valentine’s Day is upon us. One way to celebrate is to treat your special someone, or yourself, to a new “do” at the salon. So, we called on the experts of all things hair, sisters Lynnae and Kate D’Alleva, the owners of DryLand Salon. Here’s what Kate shared about their business.

When did you open DryLand Salon and why did you pick Canton?

We opened DryLand Salon 6 years ago in 2014. We were both ready to spend some time on “dry land”, but not ready to give up the water completely, so we agreed that Canton and its easy access to the harbor were perfect for us!

We’re a good business pair. Lynnae’s the artist (stylist) and I’m the numbers, but we both love being on the water and grew up sailing together. Before opening DryLand Salon, I used to captain yachts all over, but missed my family. Lynnae was doing amazing hair, but wanted other stylists to have the same “hair health first” attitude towards their work as she did. Reaching “dryland” is the feeling of finally being done after a long, hard voyage at sea, and both of us were ready to spend some time on DryLand. That feeling of DryLand is something Canton gives us all the time!

Tell us a little bit about your business? What services do you offer?

We are a full-service hair salon offering cuts, color, smoothing treatments, and styling services. Most people find us when they are looking to fix some damage or learn to love their curls. Our stylists enjoy teaching their clients the best ways to take care of their hair at home and are constantly learning the latest trends and techniques in hair care.

Do you have any specializations?

Lynnae is a wizard with curly hair. People who’ve never liked their curly hair before fall in love with our stylist’s curly techniques and coaching. All of our hair artists must run the gauntlet of Lynnae’s curly cutting, coloring, care, and styling training! It’s intimidating stuff. She was certified by all the top curly studios in the world, like Devacurl, Ouidad, Curlisto, and others. Then she took all that knowledge and created her own techniques that we use in the salon. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen our curly balayage!

What are some of the current beauty trends available at the salon? Is there a new “it” color for Spring?

This spring is about having extremely subtle pops of lightness to bring out your skin tone, like the sun has already found you and gave you just a kiss of color on your beautiful, shiny locks. Our stylists have been using the latest techniques in balayage to achieve this oh-so-pretty look!

What service(s) would you recommend to gift for Valentine’s Day?

Flowers and chocolates are nice, but we recommend skipping the empty calories and opting for the luxury of having someone pamper your hair. A gorgeous shampoo and a deep, deep conditioning mask for that special someone… We’re melting. Can’t decide? We have gift cards!

But also don’t forget about your gal pals around V-Day! We’re offering our first-ever Curly Styling Class on February 17th, and tickets include a kick-ass goodie bag and discounts on future appointments! Buy a ticket for you and your curly girl-in-arms! We know Team DryLand supports the community by participating in local events like Light Night Canton. How else do you show your support?

We love supporting the local schools and veterans’ charities with donations, but we probably focus most of our giving on supporting and protecting our local waterways. As sailors and lovers of the water, we like to put our volunteer time and funds towards things that help the harbor be beautiful and accessible for us all! (We will have just wrapped up a fundraiser for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation on January 25th).

What do you like most about living/working in Canton?

I’ve probably talked about it too much, but we love the water. We love being able to walk down to Canton Waterfront Park and stroll along the promenade and see all our neighbors. Everyone is so friendly, especially at the CCA-supervised Canton Dog Park. Lynnae’s puppy has lots of friends there, too! Canton feels like a cozy little port town within this bigger city, and we are charmed by it all the time!

Is there anything else you'd like our community to know?

Can we talk about boats some more? We want to thank our wonderful employees for making DryLand Salon feel so welcoming and run so smoothly. Our team is growing and it just keeps getting better. We’re gonna need a bigger boat for our annual team boat trip! If you know anyone with a big enough boat, we’re interested!
